Several names, one company
The group trades under a range of regional banners. A card is usually accepted across them, so a recipient who shops at a differently named store in the family can still use it.
Tell them that. People assume a card only works at the name printed on it and never try.
Acceptance across banners is not universal, so if the recipient shops at one specific store it is worth confirming that banner participates.
What the balance will not buy
Supermarkets sell regulated goods and gift balance is commonly fenced off from them:
- Alcohol and tobacco, where local rules restrict it.
- Lottery tickets, postage, money transfers.
- Prescription items in some cases.
- Other gift cards, always.
- Fuel at the attached station, where that is a separate business.
Most of this is regulation rather than shop policy, but it does mean the card is not quite cash.

The chain runs a fuel rewards scheme tied to grocery spending. Whether spending from a gift card earns those points varies — worth the recipient checking, because for a regular shopper it is a real amount over a year.
Online orders and pickup
Many stores support online ordering with pickup or delivery. Card acceptance for those varies by market and by fulfilment method. If the recipient shops online rather than in person, that is the thing to confirm first.
Why it is a good gift
Food gets bought every week. The card is spent quickly, completely, on something needed — no remainder problem and no question of taste. For a household under pressure it is the least loaded way to help.
