Three billing routes
- Direct. Billed by the service from a card on file. A gift code can usually apply here.
- Through an app store. The platform bills them. A service code generally cannot touch it; you need the app store's credit instead.
- Through a bundle or a provider. Sold alongside broadband, mobile or another streaming service. Gift codes usually cannot apply at all, because the subscription is not really theirs to pay separately.
That third route is more common with Disney+ than with most services, and it is the one people forget to check.
Bundles complicate the gift
Where the service is sold as part of a package with other streaming brands, the package is billed as one line. A code for one component of it typically has nowhere to go.
If the recipient mentions a bundle, ask which provider bills them before buying anything.
Prepaid periods versus credit
Some markets sell a fixed period — a number of months — rather than an amount of money. That product is usually the better gift where it exists, because it extends an existing subscription without any of the credit-versus-billing ambiguity.
