Returns and refunds when you paid with a gift card

The rule is simple and catches nearly everyone the first time: refunds go back the way they came. Pay with a gift card and you get a gift card back — usually a new one, not the one you used.

Why refunds return to a gift card

Two reasons, both boring and both immovable:

  • Fraud control. If refunds paid out to bank cards, a stolen gift card could be converted into cash by buying and returning.
  • Accounting. The money never touched a bank card, so there is nowhere to send it.

This is close to universal. Asking for a bank refund instead is almost always refused, and the person refusing cannot override it.

Split payments refund proportionally

Pay £60 as £40 gift and £20 card, return everything, and you normally get £20 to the bank and £40 as a gift card.

Partial returns split the same way. Return one £30 item from that order and you will typically see roughly £20 back as gift balance and £10 to the bank.

Some retailers refund the gift portion first on a partial return, which is slightly better for you. It is not something to count on.

The refund is usually a new card

This is the part that causes lost money. The refund often arrives as a newly issued gift card by email, not as a credit to the original one.

That new card:

  • Arrives in an email that looks like marketing and gets ignored.
  • Has its own code and its own expiry, starting fresh.
  • Is easy to lose entirely.

Watch for it after any return, and file it properly. See how to keep gift codes safe and organised.

Faulty goods are different

Where goods are faulty, consumer law in many countries gives you rights that sit above the shop's returns policy — including, in some cases, a refund in the original form of payment. This varies by country and is worth looking up locally rather than taking a shop's first answer.

The shop's standard policy is not the limit of your rights when something is actually broken.

Gifts returned by the recipient

If you gave someone something bought with your gift card and they return it, the refund generally goes to them as gift balance, not back to you. Include a gift receipt if the shop offers one; it changes how the return is handled.

Practical advice

  • Do not pay with a gift card for something you are likely to return, if you would rather have the money.
  • Keep the order number. Refund tracing without it is slow.
  • Check the new card arrived within a week of the return being accepted.

Common questions

Can I get a cash refund for something I bought with a gift card?
Almost never under a standard returns policy. Faulty goods are a separate case where local consumer law may give you more.
Does the refund go back onto the same card?
Often not. Many retailers issue a new gift card by email instead, with its own code and its own expiry.
How is a split payment refunded?
Usually proportionally — part to the bank card, part as gift balance, in the same ratio as the original payment.
