The deciding question
Who takes the money each month?
- The service itself, from a card on file → their own gift card may work.
- An app store, as part of the phone or tablet bill → the app store's gift card works, and the service's does not.
- A third party — a broadband bundle, an employer, a reseller → usually neither works.
Everything else follows from that.
How the recipient can check in thirty seconds
In the service's account settings, under billing or membership, they will see one of:
- A payment card ending in four digits → billed directly.
- The words "via" or "through" and a platform name → billed by the app store.
- A note that the subscription is managed elsewhere → third party.
This is worth checking before buying, not after. It is the difference between a useful gift and an awkward one.
Direct billing: three behaviours
Even when the service bills directly, gift balance can behave in three ways:
- Applied automatically at the next renewal, drawing down monthly. The best case.
- Applied only to new subscriptions, not to a running one.
- Not applied to subscriptions at all — the balance buys one-off purchases only.
There is no way to know without checking the service's own help page.
Prepaid subscription codes are a different product
Some services sell a code for a fixed period — three months, twelve months — rather than a balance. These almost always work on an existing subscription, extending it.
If it exists for the service in question, this is the better product to ask for. It removes the whole question.
Auto-renewal does not stop
Gift balance covering a renewal does not cancel the card on file. When the balance runs out, billing resumes on the card automatically. This is fine if expected and unwelcome if not.
Tell the recipient. "This covers about four months, then it goes back to your card" is a useful sentence.
What to do if it will not work
- Buy a prepaid subscription code for the same service, if one exists.
- Buy app store credit instead, if that is who bills them.
- Give a card for something else and say what it was meant to be for.
