1. A typo
By a distance the most common. The usual suspects: 0 and O, 1 and l and I, 5 and S, 8 and B.
Fix: copy and paste rather than typing. If you must type, read it in groups of four.
2. The PIN is missing
Some codes need a separate PIN. Without it the code is rejected exactly as if it were wrong.
Fix: check the original email for a second, shorter number.
3. Wrong country
The code belongs to another country's storefront. Everything looks right and nothing works.
Fix: there generally is not one — this is why region is worth stating up front. Details in why region matters for gift codes.
4. Already redeemed
Either you applied it before and forgot, or somebody else got there first.
Fix: check your account balance before assuming theft. If it is genuinely gone and never reached you, report it the same day.
5. Wrong box
The code went into the promo code field instead of the gift card field.
Fix: find the payment step; the gift card field is usually there, not on the basket page.
6. Wrong account type
Business accounts, child accounts and some regional accounts cannot hold gift balances.
Fix: redeem on a standard personal account.
7. The basket blocks it
Gift balances often cannot pay for other gift cards, marketplace items or subscription renewals.
Fix: remove the excluded item and try again with the rest.
8. Too many attempts
Several failed tries in a row can trigger a temporary lock. This is anti-fraud behaviour, not a broken code.
Fix: wait an hour. Do not keep hammering it.
9. It expired
Less common than people assume, but promotional balances expire quickly.
Fix: none, though it is worth asking. See expiry dates and fees.
When to stop and ask for help
Stop after two careful attempts. Then gather:
- The code and PIN, exactly as received.
- The date it was issued and by whom.
- The exact error message, word for word.
- The account and storefront you tried it on.
That is everything needed to resolve it. Sending "my code doesn't work" without those details adds a day to the process. If we sent you the code, reply to the confirmation email and it goes straight to a person.
