Why general retail cards win on flexibility
One card covers electronics, homeware, books, clothing and groceries at a large retailer, and the recipient chooses. For a colleague, a distant relative or anyone whose taste you cannot predict, this is the sensible answer.
The trade-off is that a general card says less than a specific one. A card for a shop someone actually loves reads as thought; a card for the biggest retailer in the country reads as convenient. Sometimes convenient is exactly right.
The marketplace exclusion
Large retail sites list two kinds of stock:
- Sold by the retailer. Gift balance works normally.
- Sold by a third-party seller and merely listed on the site. Gift balance frequently does not work.
The listing usually says "sold by" somewhere near the price, and people do not read it, because it is not information they have ever needed before.
This becomes a real problem when the specific item someone wants happens to be marketplace stock. The balance is fine; it just cannot buy that thing. There is a fuller treatment in using gift cards on marketplaces.
Department stores and concessions
A department store card usually works across the store's own departments but not always at the concessions inside it — the branded counters that are separate businesses paying for floor space. Same building, different till system.
Online versus in store
Most large retailers accept their cards both ways now. The exceptions cluster around:
- Online-only retailers, obviously.
- Supermarket cards that work in store but not for online delivery slots.
- Cards issued as refunds, which sometimes carry narrower terms than purchased ones.
Choosing an amount
General retail is the one category where an odd amount is fine. There is always something at £13. The remainder problem barely exists because the range is so wide.
If in doubt, round numbers still look more deliberate.
Who it suits
Anyone you do not know well; anyone setting up a home; anyone who would rather choose than be chosen for. Less good for someone who has a strong favourite brand, where a specific card would land better.
