Franchise acceptance
The overwhelming majority of branches are run by independent operators under licence. Participation in a gift card or app scheme is generally a decision each operator makes.
In practice most participate, but the exceptions cluster exactly where people actually eat: motorway services, airports, railway stations and inside retail parks. Those are frequently operated under different arrangements.
If the recipient's nearest branch is at a service station, check before buying.
The app is usually better
Where the brand runs an app with offers and a loyalty scheme, adding value there tends to be more reliable than carrying a card — and it stacks with the deals, which are a real part of the value at this price point.
Tell the recipient to look at the app rather than just handing the card to a cashier.
Region
Country-specific. The brand operates as separate national businesses and cards do not cross borders.
Amount
Small amounts work fine here and do not feel mean — this is not a category where a large figure is expected. The price of a few meals is a perfectly normal gift, particularly for a teenager.
Remainders are easy to spend because there is always something cheap on the menu.
Who it suits
Teenagers, students, families on a long drive, anyone who eats out casually rather than as an occasion. It is not a celebratory gift and does not pretend to be.
Asking for one
Country and amount. If the recipient mainly uses one specific branch, mention it and we will flag any obvious franchise risk. Wider context in the food and drink guide.
